Two times champions Kolkata Knight Riders is one of the initial eight Indian Premier League franchises owned by Bollywood star Shahrukh Khan.

Franchise History

On September 2007 Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the establishment of the Indian Premier League, a T20 cricket tournament to be started in 2008.

Kolkata Knight Riders was one of the eight inaugural members of the IPL in 2008. The team representing Kolkata was eventually bought by Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan’s company Red Chillies Entertainment in partnership with actress Juhi Chawla and her husband Jay Mehta for a price of $75.09 million.

The journey of Kolkata Knight Riders

Although the team has gained immense popularity due to its association with celebrity owners, the first three season for KKR was not so good as they failed to qualified for the playoffs.

In 2008 they win only 6 games out of 14 they played in the group match and settled at the 6th position leaving their fans sorrowful.

Similarly, the performance of the Kolkata Knight Rider in 2009 was really bad as they settled themselves at the bottom of the point table by losing 10 matches out of 14 they played.

By winning only 7 games in 2010 IPL they again failed to play in playoffs.

The team’s performance, however, improved from the fourth season as it qualified for the IPL playoffs but in the eliminator round they lost to Mumbai Indians.

In 2012 KKR wins their fans heart along with the title after beating Chennai Super Kings in the final match. The second title they win is in IPL 2014 by crushing KXIP in the final.

Since then Kolkata Knight Riders has qualified for the playoff in 2016, 2017, and 2018.
